In Peru, women suffer higher rates of poverty and unemployment than men. About 50 percent of Peruvian women in the Sacred Valley region, which lies outside Cusco, will suffer severe physical or sexual partner abuse during their lifetimes. In 2012, members of the Rotary Club of Boulder’s New Generations pilot satellite club came up with a plan to address all of those problems by concentrating on empowering local women – specifically in their ability to make and act upon their decisions.

Boulder Rotary Club is looking into the potential of forming a new satellite group – BRC.Roots -- similar to Boulder New Generations Rotary Club, to meet at times other than Friday noon, engage in local service projects, and accommodate participation in service activity by members’ families and friends.

BRC’s plan is to set in motion an exploratory group to get this started during the remainder of this Rotary year, which ends 6/30/16.  Nine months is time in which Boulder Rotary Club members who wish to join the effort can develop its prospects more fully, so BRC could adopt a more formal plan and structure for the new Rotary year starting July 2016.

This group can include current members who love Boulder Rotary but cannot regularly attend Friday meetings – or are finding meal costs more than fits where they are right now, professionally or personally – and want to help shape this new group.

Like BNGRC, these members are Boulder Rotary Club members, welcome to attend BRC's Friday meetings or BNGRC meetings at any time.

4th Annual Boulder County BrewBQ Sponsors and Donors 2015-06-23 06:00:00Z 0

A crowd of Rotarians, fully caffeinated and rarin' to go, were on hand to set up the BrewBQ event bright and early Saturday.
Canopies popped up and were hand-carried to their pre-painted, assigned spots. Bright signs sprouted.  During set-up, thankfully, the sun stayed behind clouds.
By 11 am, an empty field at 95th and Arapahoe in Lafayette had been transformed into a fine-looking event from which issued the delicious aromas of barbecue and brews of all kinds on all sides.  People lined up to get in before the appointed 11 o'clock hour.
DJ Ian kept everyone moving to the music. The sun came out and a little breeze carried aloft clouds of foam from the slip-&- slide-into-bubbles in the Kids' Area.  Sally Brown's son Marek was soaked from head to toe by 11:10 and STILL begged to draw the winning raffle prize numbers from 12:30 on. The rest of the BRC crew hawked BRC's wares, periodically doffing their Official Volunteer T shirts and seeking shade and refreshment to keep cool.
BRC contributed lots of volunteer help, many sponsorships, substantial advance ticket sales, at least eleven canopies, amateur barbecuers and home brewers, sales of straw hats to ward off the strong summery rays, voting rights to select the People's Choice of all BBQ offerings, 8 great raffle prizes, and extra taste tokens when the five tastes that come with event entry were not enough.
Coal Creek Rotary sold ice cream and sodas. The YMCA of Boulder Valley turned out most of their staff, tables, chairs, signs, and valuable support, as well as some volunteers.
No surprise to Club members, multiple prizes including a hands-down People's Choice Award by a wide margin, went at the end of the day to Stan Benson with the able assistance of his Ameriprise office partner Dan Schultz, with red-headed toddler Noah in tow. Those "in the know" knew they might snag a rib from Stan as soon as he delivered the 6 best pieces for professional judging. Mmmmm, so good!   Not only that - Darryl Brown won an amateur brewing prize.
The obvious conclusion - it was a Great Rotary Day! A thousand thanks to everyone who supported the BrewBQ in any way.
A Big BrewBQ Thank You! Laura Smith 2015-06-23 06:00:00Z 0

District 5450's approach to the required abuse and harassment training and certification means EVERY affected Club MEMBER must take the new training and certification exam.

Including anyone under the age of 21 and any elderly person, as well as others, such as a person with a disability.

Including transporting a person at risk by personal vehicle.

Including BRC members who offer rides to Club meetings to someone who no longer drives.

Committee chairs must convey this information to their committee members, report the list of their committee members requiring training and certification, monitor compliance with this policy, and report to the Board through their Board Liaisons.
BRC member Chad Stamm, who is in charge of this for District, says the training and certification will take roughly a half-hour. After completing the exam, email your results to  Chad will advise members who need a new background check. The Club has a budget to reimburse members for background checks.
Thanks, everyone, for getting right on this!
